The cost of living in Türkiye depends on the city, district, household size, housing choice and lifestyle. Because prices and exchange rates can move quickly, a fixed table of old US-dollar amounts is not a reliable way to plan a current budget.

A practical budget should be prepared in Turkish lira using current local quotes. If you earn or hold another currency, convert the total with a current exchange rate and keep a contingency for exchange-rate and price changes.

What should a living-cost budget include?

  • Housing: rent or mortgage payments, deposit, building dues and moving costs.
  • Utilities: electricity, water, natural gas, internet, mobile service and any building services.
  • Food: groceries, household supplies and eating out.
  • Transport: public transport, taxis or vehicle fuel, insurance, tax, parking and maintenance.
  • Health: insurance premiums, medicines and out-of-pocket healthcare.
  • Education and childcare: school fees, transport, meals, materials and activities where relevant.
  • Administrative costs: residence-permit, document, translation and renewal costs where applicable.
  • Personal spending: clothing, leisure, travel and an emergency reserve.

Housing and city differences

Housing is usually the largest and most location-sensitive part of the budget. Istanbul can vary substantially between districts and even between nearby neighbourhoods. Coastal and tourism-focused areas can also change with season and demand. Compare several current listings, confirm what is included in the rent, and ask for the current building dues before committing.

A nationwide average should not be treated as a quote for a particular home. Building age, heating system, size, facilities and commute can materially change both rent and monthly bills.

How to build a current monthly estimate

  1. Collect current housing offers for the exact district and home type you need.
  2. Ask the landlord or building management for recent utility and building-dues information.
  3. Price a realistic weekly grocery basket from local retailers.
  4. Calculate the commute using the current transport tariff or actual vehicle costs.
  5. Add insurance, healthcare, education and immigration-related costs that apply to your household.
  6. Add a contingency instead of assuming that today’s prices or exchange rate will remain fixed.

Official data to check

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) publishes the Consumer Price Index and other official statistics. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye publishes official data including exchange rates. Residence-permit categories and conditions should be checked with the Presidency of Migration Management.
