In 330 AD, Emperor Constantine I made Byzantium the capital of the Roman Empire, renaming it Constantinople.

Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, was the brightest and wealthiest city in the world during the early Middle Ages. It remained the capital of the Byzantine Empire until 1453, when it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.

In this period, Istanbul will be the capital of a great world empire, and it will dominate the lands spread over three continents for more than 400 years.

After the conquest of the city by Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Mehmet the Conqueror) on May 29, 1453, the Ottoman capital period begins. The city, which was called Konstantiniyye by the Muslims, was commemorated by the Greeks with the nickname `E Stin Polis` (To the Capital/City). The Ottomans also used this name and changed it to Istanbul. The Russians named the city Tsargrad (Tsar's city). The name of the city in the Balkans was Stambul.

About Istanbul Airports

Istanbul Airport is the International Airport serving Istanbul, Turkey.
